Kevin is a recognizable and unique supporting character from 2009 Disney Pixar's 'Up'. She's a fictional bird which inspired by peafowls, ostriches, and toucans to make a crossbreed of the species.Â
Here I made my own Kevin as the last art exhibition content of my 11th grade in my highschool. Some reasons I decided to make Kevin are to experiment with bright and variative colors with paper shingles for the feathers detailing, and to utilize some recycled materials I could find around my house such as used papers and plastic bags, also one of the easiest thing to make for a beginner.
The Kevin I made is mainly made of recycled papers, mostly used printed papers so I didn't have to waste some blank sheets of paper. Some other materials I used are recyclable materials I could find around my home such as used plastic bags and unused concord papers. In this case, this creation gave me a chance to embrace my hobby of working on detailing.
The process of making Kevin from scratch was around seven days, starting from the sketch with the color mapping., following some references from the internet. Then I started making the sculpture from the limbs skeleton made of an unused cardboard, and then some bundled plastic bags attached to another by tapes. The entire rough shape was filled with recycled paper pieces with more tapes, and was given the outer skin with thinner paper layer with wood glue.
For the upper layer of feathers, I made a shell-like structure made of thick paper pieces to suppert the larger feather pieces that will be added, and this method was also applied to the small wings. For the colors, I used primary colors of acrylic paints to make the secondary colors, and painted a sheet of unused thick paper sheets and the limbs, and cut the colored sheets into pieces of feathers to be sticked around the bird's body.
